I checked out Primm and Jean recently. Jean seems to be headed in a good direction, while Primm has seen better days.

The roller coaster at Buffalo Bill’s is closed for repairs, though I did not see any being done. The log flume did not appear to have much water in it and was also closed. The Big Shot ride outside the back door was dismantled a few years back. There was a Frog Hopper ride for smaller children and an arcade.

The monorail that connects the casinos does not appear to be in service anymore. The shuttle only runs on Saturdays. The outlet mall has significant space for rent. It also apparently has some overzealous security.

Whiskey Pete’s

I stopped at Whiskey Pete’s first. I discovered that it has some upgraded video poker since my last visit. There is quarter and dollar 7/5 Bonus Poker, as well as 9/5 Jacks or Better and Double Double Bonus. These games are in the 98 percent range, but it is better than what I found in previous visits. All Primm casinos had these games throughout the floor, including at the bars.

The Whiskey Pete’s table game pit consists of craps, roulette, blackjack, Three Card Poker and Pai Gow Poker. The minimum bet for all games is $5. Craps has 3-4-5 times odds. The field pays double on 12. The craps table is a mini version and only needs one dealer. Roulette is double zero. All blackjack pays 6:5.

There is not a sportsbook at Whiskey Pete’s. A William Hill kiosk accepts wagers. It is located between the bar and monorail station.

Primm Valley Resort

My next stop was Primm Valley Resort. This is the flagship in Primm. It is attached to the outlet mall and has a convention center. It was the only casino that had any players in the pit on this Wednesday afternoon.

Primm has the same video poker options as Whiskey Pete’s. It has a full-service William Hill sportsbook near the valet entrance.

The minimum bet at all table games, except for 3:2 blackjack and Pai Gow Poker, is $5. There are two craps tables at Primm Valley Resort. One is full-size. The other is a miniature version. The odds are 3-4-5 times. The field pays double on 12.

There are two roulette tables. Both have two zeros. Other table games include Three Card Poker, Mississippi Stud and $10 Face Up Pai Gow Poker.

There are eight 6:5 blackjack tables. There is also a 6:5 Free Bet Blackjack game. The only 3:2 blackjack game in town is at Primm Valley Resort. It has a $25 minimum bet. It uses eight decks. Players may double down before and after splitting. Surrender is not available. Aces may only be split once. The dealer hits soft 17 at all Primm tables.

Buffalo Bill’s

Buffalo Bill’s seems to be the slowest of the three casinos in Primm. The table games were not open during my Wednesday afternoon visit. The casino was virtually deserted. There were maybe five people playing slots. Nobody was in the sportsbook. The food court and arcade had about as many guests.

The table game pit consisted of three roulette tables, a mini craps table, seven 6:5 blackjack games, two Three Card Poker tables, Face Up Pai Gow Poker and 6:5 Free Bet Blackjack. The minimum at all games is $5, except Pai Gow, where it is $10. Roulette is double zero. Craps offers 3-4-5 times odds. The field pays double on 12.

Buffalo Bill’s had the same quarter and dollar video poker as the other Primm resorts that consisted of 7/5 Bonus Poker, 9/5 Jacks or Better and 9/5 Double Bonus. It also added 9/5 Double Double Bonus. The high limit section offered $5 and $10 9/6 Jacks or Better, 8/5 Bonus Poker and 9/6 Double Double Bonus.

The food court has a Panda Express and McDonald’s. There is also a 24-hour Denny’s. A pizza place is open on weekends.

Buffalo Bill’s is home to the Desperado roller coaster. It is one of the tallest roller coasters in the country. There is also a log flume and Frog Hopper. All rides are closed until further notice. There is an arcade in this same area that is open 24 hours a day.

Hotel Rooms

All three Primm casinos have hotels. The rates are similar between the properties. Weekdays run around $35. Weekends get closer to $100 but generally not over that amount. This rate is for the base rooms with one king or two queens. Suites run about double the normal rates. The resort fee is $16 plus tax.

Nongaming Activities in Primm

An outlet mall is attached to Primm Valley Resort. It also has a convention center. Each casino offers a lounge area. Buffalo Bill’s offers a movie theater. Primm Valley has a spa. There are two golf courses.

The Verdict

Primm is a decent place to stop for a highway break. Many gamblers will find enough to do here to make a vacation out of it.

Primm offers a wide variety of dining options from fast food to full-service. Gas is extremely expensive. It was about $1.35 more per gallon than Las Vegas and $0.54 more than Jean during my visit. The outlet mall has many major retailers but also a vast amount of empty space.

The gambling is acceptable for sports bettors and craps players. The video poker is better than the Las Vegas Strip but worse than downtown and the locals markets. The $5 table game minimum ($10 for Pai Gow Poker) is reasonable and should make most players happy. All blackjack is 6:5 except for a single table at Primm Valley.
